Kenyatta University, located in Nairobi, Kenya is the second largest public university in the country (after University of Nairobi). The University is located in Kahawa, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Nairobi's city centre, along the Nairobi-Thika road.

History

The university traces it history to a colonial military installation known as the Templer Barracks. In 1965 Templer Barracks was converted into Kenyatta College, primarily a teacher training institution (majorly S1 graduates). Kenyatta College was then elevated to a constituent college of the University of Nairobi in 1970. In 1985 the university college was incorporated by the then-president Daniel arap Moi and was renamed Kenyatta University. This was done through establishment of the Kenyatta University Act by the National Assembly of Kenya.

The majority of its graduates were from the school of education, making the university a leader in education courses. Over time the college has diversified its course offerings to remain competitive and help achieve the national goals of eradicating ignorance.

To achieve this, the university has created a solid ICT infrastructure which includes a campus network based on fibre optic technology, gigabit access to the network for both students and staff to facilitate access to the Internet and localized information services.
It has built a morgue with the introduction of surgery and medicine courses. The university is building more labs and reviving projects that had been stalled for years, including completion of an arts complex. More effort is being put on the flow of information by investing in communication channels and getting feedback from students. This includes a community radio, which is streamed via the Internet to the satellite campuses across Kenya.
The Arts Complex (phases 1 and 2) that houses the university radio station KU 99.9 FM, 2 hostels (Nyayo 5 and 6), New Lecture Halls (Onesmo OleMoiyoi Lecture Thetre) and the science laboratories have been finalized. Another milestone has been the completion of a large 5 storey laboratory and library unit that is visible from the Thika road; it is rumoured to accommodate all 24,000 students as well as an amphitheatre.
A state of the art Business and Student Servive Center was opened on May 2009 that has facilities including the office os the dean of students, food courts, banks, post office, Student governance offices, mentoring offices, the university printing press, a computer laboratory which is meant to be open for 224 hours and aa reading room just to mention a few.

University of Nairobi

Nairobi universitet.jpgThe University of Nairobi (UON) is the largest university in Kenya. Although its history as an educational institution goes back to 1956, it did not become an independent university until 1970 when the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the University of Nairobi.

In 2002 the University had some 22,000 students, of whom 17,200 were undergraduates and 4,800 postgraduates. The university has launched several policy frameworks and introduced module 2 degrees to cope with the demand of higher education in Kenya.

History

The inception of the University of Nairobi is traced back to 1956, with the establishment of the Royal Technical College which admitted its first lot of A-level graduates for technical courses in April the same year. The Royal Technical College was transformed into the second University College in East Africa on 25 June 1961 under the name Royal College Nairobi. The college was entitled to a special relation with the University of London whereupon it started preparing students in the faculties of arts, science, and engineering for degrees awarded by the University of London.

On 20 May 1964, the Royal College Nairobi was renamed University College Nairobi as a constituent college of the inter-territorial Federal University of East Africa, and henceforth the enrolled students were to study for degrees of the University of East Africa rather than the University of London. In 1970, the University College Nairobi transformed into the first national university in Kenya and was renamed the University of Nairobi. Later, the university made ties with the University of Rome La Sapienza and Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium mainly for research funding purposes.

Addis Ababa University

Addis Ababa University (formerly Haile Selassie I University) is a university in Ethiopia. It was originally named "University College of Addis Ababa" at its founding, then renamed for the former Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie I in 1962, receiving its current name in 1975.

Although the university has six of its seven campuses within Addis Ababa (the seventh is located in Debre Zeit, about 45 kilometers away), it also maintains branches in many cities throughout Ethiopia, leading to the claim of being "the largest university in Africa." The government assigns qualified students to these universities upon completion of secondary school. The writer and theorist Richard Cummings served as a member of the Faculty of Law.

Associated institutions include the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, founded by Richard Pankhurst. It is the only non-U.S. member institution associated with the United Negro College Fund.
Addis Ababa University logo.pngHistory
Addis Ababa University.

Addis Ababa University was founded in 1950 at the request of Haile Selassie by a Canadian Jesuit, Dr Lucien Matte, S.J. as a two-year college, and began operations the next year. Over the following two years an affiliation with the University of London was developed.

As part of their sweeping changes, the Derg ordered Addis Ababa University temporarily closed March 4, 1975 and dispatched its 50,000 students to the countryside to help build support for the new regime. Ironically, it was a group of former college students in Tigray Province who founded the Tigrayan Peoples' Liberation Front to resist the Derg government, which later joined a number of other groups to become the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front.

The university offered its first master's programs in 1979 and its first PhD programs in 1987.

Three top university administrators resigned their posts December 2002 in protest against increasing government interference in internal university matters. Government officials wanted the University to change its system of student evaluations to conform to a "gemgema" (self-criticism) system favored by the ruling party.

Adama University

Adama Science and Technology University (formerly known as Nazareth Technical College, Nazareth College of Technical Teachers Education, and Adama University) is a university with branches in Adama city and a branch in Asella, and Debre Zeyit cities, Oromia Region, Ethiopia and also in Addis Ababa (Winget campus).

Overview

Established in September 1993, Adama Science and Technology University was the first institute in Ethiopia to offer degree programs for technical teachers. Formerly it was known as Nazareth Technical College and Nazareth College of Technical Teachers Education. The university adopted the name Adama University on July 9, 2005.

University of Asmara

The University of Asmara (UoA) was Eritrea's first university and is located in the capital city, Asmara. It was created by the Piae Madres Nigritiae (Comboni Sisters). The school was meant to provide for the local population, though its initial enrollment in the 50s was entirely Italian.
The University was originally founded in 1958, albeit by a different name, the Catholic College of Santa Famiglia.

By 1964 the University had been renamed and began offering Associate Diploma programs in the Arts, Commerce, and the Sciences.

The school just limped along through the 1970s until 1979 when a new president pushed through a major reorganization of the curriculum and structure. The next years saw an increase in students from 300 to 2,700. New courses, staff, day and evening extension programs and campus buildings revived the University, together with a bilateral agreement to exchange students and faculty with the University of Addis Ababa, particularly focusing on graduate training in Addis Ababa to produce faculty for Eritrea.
However, the university stopped accepting incoming students in the early 2000s. In 2002, the government issued a directive re-configuring the university. This effectively shut down all of the university's undergraduate programs. Future students were not allowed to enroll and were directed to the Eritrea Institute of Technology, which opened after the University of Asmara closed. High school graduates were not allowed to pick their course of study, and were assigned vocational programs based on their performance on a maltriculation exam, however students in the military were granted a medical waiver from the exams. The government denied exit visas for those looking to study abroad, and university academics who wished to travel abroad required permission from the University president and the government. The university has been non-functional since the end of the academic year 2005-2006. The university was ordered to close its doors supposedly due to student protests in 2001 against alleged excessive government control of the university and lack of freedom in every-day life.
Current programs

To date, the fate of the UOA remains unknown, with the government having never given any explanation for the closure of the university.

Eritrea Institute of Technology

The Eritrea Institute of Technology is located on Mai Nefhi, about 20 km south west of Asmara, near the Mai Nefhi dam. It currently has three colleges: Science, Engineering and Technology, and Education. Other new colleges are also under construction elsewhere in the country in other fields of studies. The Institute began with about 5,500 students during the 2003-2004 academic year.

The EIT was opened after the University of Asmara was ordered closed. The government however claims that reason for the opening of the college was to achieve equal distribution of higher learning in areas away from the capital city of Asmara. Similar colleges were opened in other parts of the country. College enrolment has dramatically increased in the country as a result of the opening of these institutions.

Currently the Eritrea institute of Technology or EIT at Mai Nefhi is the main college of higher studies in science, engineering and education in Eritrea. The number of faculties is increasing every year and the EIT facilities are getting better. The funding for EIT is basically external. However some funding is also provided by the Ministry of Education, Eritrea. The number of students graduating is also increasing every year.

Surprisingly enough, the University of Asmara, the only university in the country and one with international accreditation was ordered to close its doors in favor of the newly established colleges, none of which has a recognized international standing. Currently the government has plans to shut down EIT in 2012 and ship the student back to UOA and use the EIT facility for military training purposes. The government has done this because the previous sawa camp was to far for the students and wanted students to be encouraged by being close to asmara the capital and for mainly budget purposes currently the UOA is undergoing severe renovation for the new students. Second of all students with a UOA degree, certificate, and diploma will be internationally accredited. Although there is much frustration with students over the changes in schools the ministry of education is working diligently to encourage students. students who have 1yr left will be still in mai nefhi but in a different facility from the national high school students, to encourage sawa students how much important higher education is. EIT is currently helping with 45% percent of the development in Eritrea. From chemical engineers to Geologists Eritrea is reaching higher and higher to a developed country. Currently EIT's motto is EDUCATION FOR NATION BUILDING students love the motto and feel a sense of pride when they recognize that, Students realize that they are working day and night to give their country a better future.
